Characteristics Of Conversational Writing

Connect with your readers through a more conversational writing style.

Conversational writing is a fluid and easy way to convey just about anything to your audience. A lot of the time it might be difficult to focus on a piece written in a formal tone. Mastering a conversational style of writing allows you to really connect with your readers, making them believe they are engaged in a conversation. A number of clear and distinct characteristics separate a conversational style of writing from formal writing.

Contractions

A contraction is the shortening of a word or a group of words by sacrificing the appropriate internal letters. In conversational writing, by using as many contractions as possible, you are engaging the readers while the writing itself flows nicely. You speak using contractions, so it really helps to use them when writing in a conversational style as well. Instead of "you will find that I am correct," try, "you'll find that I'm correct." Read it aloud and hear how it mimics your speech.

Literary devices

To give your writing flair, use some simple literary devices such as metaphors and similes. Literary devices tend to make your writing more colorful and engaging. A good conversation has a natural color and is automatically thrown into life with the use of devices. A skilled conversationalist will not simply say, "the lake was brown," but will utilize the sentence with, say, an appropriate simile: "The lake was brown like mud." The use of these literary devices add color and intrigue to conversation and so will do the same with conversational writing.

Grammar and Structure

Basic structural and grammatical rules in the English language are entirely necessary in formal writing, for example, ending sentences with prepositions and avoiding abbreviations. You don't need to follow these rules when writing in a conversational style. In conversation, you do not speak formally, like you would when writing a dissertation. People reading conversational writing want you to make their lives easier. They want you to write in a fun and engaging way, but also want to know that you are aware of the rules, but simply choose not to implement them.

Storytelling

Conversational writing is based on storytelling. When you are involved in a conversation with a friend or acquaintance, it might be about the latest mobile phone you purchased or it could simply be a friendly piece of advice. It is in people's nature to talk about themselves, even when they are helping others. If you have a personal experience that might serve as a good example or a piece of knowledge you may have acquired, your story can be clearly connected to your conversation. In this way, feel free to use a few stories in your conversational writing, ensuring that they are relevant to the subject of your writing.
