Home Interiors Of The 60s

In the 1960s, interior design was sleek and simple but with a fun-loving and personal twist. As the 1960s were during the industrialization era, designs and decor reflected this. The interior of homes during this era were memorable, to say the least, and the designs showed that sprucing up a living area required only a few changes in color and decor pieces.

Furniture

Homes in the '60s were decorated with simple, yet sleek furniture designs. Most interior decorating was geared toward minimalist and modular designs. Floral sofas and love-seats were fairly common in homes. Telephone tables, found in 1960s-era homes--were cushioned seats with a flat area for a telephone and a shelf for phone directories. Furniture was typically box-like, wide and low.

Wall Decor

During the 1960s, wood paneling was often found in the living area. Because it created a dark and drab atmosphere, the paneling was eventually phased out. Wall paint was typically in bold, solid colors. If more than one color was used, geometric designs were the norm. Floral wallpaper was often found on the walls in houses. Large clocks in the shape of a circle with spikes protruding from the center were a fashionable object.

Lighting and General Decor

Because plastic became a popular material during the '60s, different shapes for light fixtures became possible. As a result, space-age lighting designs and floor lamps became fashionable during this period. Mantelpiece decor often consisted of small clocks. Retro rugs with bold colors and geometric shapes livened up otherwise bland floors.

Colors

Colors were often bold and/or warm and inviting. Typical pallets consisted of yellows, deep reds, dark blues, orange, browns and whites. Floral patterns for both walls and furniture were commonly seen.
