Hobby Welding Projects For Beginners

Hobby Welding Projects for Beginners

There are many simple welding projects for beginners that not only allow them to practice their welding skills but also helps them create welding accessories. There are various welding methods: arc welding, which uses electricity to melt the bonding metal to bind two metals together; gas welding, which combusts acetylene in oxygen to generate heat; resistance welding, which also uses current; energy beam welding, which uses laser and electron beams; and solid-state welding, which uses vibration and pressure.

Support Stand

This particular football goal post-shaped support stand can hold long lengths of materials for cutting projects, and two of them can act like adjustable saw horses to support materials during welding. This beginner's welding project only requires you to weld at five spots.

The first welding spot is to connect a 6-inch long channel to a 1-inch pipe. The next spot is welding the pipe to a 2-inch-by-2-inch-by-1/4-inch piece of metal, then welding it to a 5/8-inch nut. Insert a 5/8-inch threaded rod into the nut and thread a nut at the top of that threaded rod so it looks like a barbell. The penultimate welding spot is between the top nut and 3-inch long channel. You've now constructed the stand portion of the support stand. Add the U-shaped metal, which serves as the support piece, by welding it on top of the 3-inch channel.

Welding Table

Weld a small steel table together by fusing all the metal pieces together through welding. Weld four same-size steel beams (legs) to two steel panels (frame), one beam per end. Connect the two steel panels together by welding a strip of steel to either end and then two more strips spaced equally between the two end strips. You now have a simple metal table.

Grill

Beginners can create a simple grill for a fire pit and enjoy the fruits of their labors with a barbeque afterward. Measure the circumference or perimeter of your fire pit, depending if it's a circle or square or rectangle. If it's a circle, simply buy a circular metal frame and weld thin, metal sticks across the face of the frame to create the grill. If rectangular or square, weld together four metal sticks cut to the length and width of the pit to make the frame of the grill. Once the frame is made, you can add metal sticks cut to size across the face of the frame.
