Graphic Arts Design Jobs

Graphic designers work with computers to create visual solutions.

Graphic designers work in a variety of professions, creating visual solutions to problems posed by the communications industry. Typically, most firms will require the applicant to have at least a bachelor's degree in graphic design. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average entry-level salary for a graphic designer is $35,000 per year (as of 2010.)

Book Designer

For those with a love of printed materials and a background in graphic design, becoming a book designer may be an attractive option. Book designers may work on a freelance basis, or full-time for a publisher. They are responsible for laying out the text and illustrations, selecting the font and designing the front and back covers of the book. The average income of a graphic designer working in book publishing is $36,910 as of 2010, according the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Web Designer

Companies and agencies employ talented graphic designers to create websites. Many web designers also work freelance from home. All graphic designers work with computer software these days, so web training is an integral part of graphic design education. Designers with the ability to produce animations will be particularly sought after, as the Internet becomes more interactive and more firms demand snazzier effects from their websites to attract attention. Growth in Internet advertising in the coming years is expected to increase the need for web-savvy graphic designers, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Advertising

Those whose education as a graphic designer also included studies of marketing and advertising are well prepared to work in advertising. Though graphic designers in advertising tend to work long hours, the salaries can be very rewarding. Entry-level graphic designers at advertising firms often work their way up the ladder to becoming design directors, who can earn as much as $95,000 per year (as of 2010, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics and the American Institute of Graphic Arts.)
