Directions For Shrink Art

Create beautiful shrink art designs.

Shrink art is created with a plastic that shrinks when heated in an oven. This process also causes the plastic to become nine times thicker, similar to piece of glass. A variety of crafts can be created using this technique including jewelry, magnets, and ornaments. The plastic can be colored with different materials such as a permanent marker or color pencil. The color intensifies during the shrinking process. This inexpensive craft is simple enough for children but can be complex enough for accomplished artists and hobbyists.

Instructions

1. Draw and color the design onto the plastic. Keep in mind the colors you select will be more intense after shrinking.

2. Cut out the design. Punch a hole at the top if using the shrink for jewelry or craft in which a hole is needed.

3. Lay the design on cookie sheet lined with brown packing paper. Brown paper bag paper also works. Space the shrink art pieces with room between them.

4. Preheat the oven to 325° F. Bake the shrink art for three minutes with the colored side up. Remove from the oven when they stop curling and lay flat again.
