Party hats add a festive note to celebrations.
Hats help make events seem more festive. Creating personalized party hats provides guests with a memorable keepsake of your celebration. Nearly any type of sturdy paper works well for party hats, including posterboard and cardstock. Once someone has formed the basic hat, children and adults can help decorate each hat so it fits the party's theme or occasion. Provide decorative materials that relate to the celebration for an easy connection to the theme.
Instructions
1. Cut a wide triangle out of a sheet of heavy, 18-by-12 inch paper. The 12-inch side is the length and the 18-inch edge is the portion that goes around someone's head.
2. Round off the corners on the bottom edge of the hat with scissors so the edge curves gently. A curved edge fits better around someone's head than a straight one.
3. Roll the triangle into a cone. Glue the overlapping edges of paper together to hold the cone together. Staple them together for additional strength.
4. Decorate the front of the hat by attaching glitter, stickers or paper embellishments. Or wrap the hat in theme-appropriate gift wrap and glue it in place.
5. Cut a piece of tissue paper into a 5-inch square and fold it in half. Cut 10 slits from the edge to within 1/2 inch of the folded edge.
6. Fluff out the cut slits, forming a paper pom-pom. Glue or staple the pom-pom to the point of the hat.
7. Staple one end of a 10- to 12-inch elastic string to the edge of one side of the hat. Staple the other end to the other side of the hat after checking to make sure the hat's strap will fit.
