Build A Smokeless Ashtray

Smoke from a burning cigarette can be greatly reduced.

Though many toxins in the air can be damaging to furniture and draperies, much of the excess smoke from a cigarette burning in the ashtray can be minimized. Making your own smokeless ashtray is an attractive, inexpensive way to create a portable air purification system with a colorful art deco look. The small, simple design of the mechanism makes it easy to clean and store, while the battery operation allows the ashtray to be used anywhere.

Instructions

1. Place the tissue box cover on a flat surface. Set the ashtray directly on the box cover. Trace around the outside edge of the bottom of the ashtray with a magic marker.

2. Cut the plastic along the marked edges using a jigsaw. Cut the marked edges slightly more until the bottom of the ashtray can drop down an eighth of an inch into the opening. Sand any rough edges or plastic burrs protruding from the box cover.

3. Drill several tiny holes into the center of the ashtray below the raised grooves. Remove any plastic burrs or plastic particles blocking the holes. Apply super glue around the perimeter of the box cover opening.

4. Drop the ashtray into the box cover opening, and apply pressure to the ashtray. Place the battery-operated air mattress pump on a flat surface with the air intake valve on top. Measure the height of the raised intake valve.

5. Place eight rubber gummy feet evenly spaced along the perimeter edge of the pump, making sure they are slightly higher than the raised air intake valve. Press a 4-inch filter cartridge onto the gummy feet, centering it over the intake valve. Place a small sheet of acrylic on a flat surface.

6. Set the box cover with the attached ashtray onto the acrylic sheet. Trace around the perimeter of the box cover using a magic marker. Cut the acrylic piece accordingly, using a jigsaw.

7. Sand any rough edges around the acrylic perimeter using fine grit sandpaper. Measure the length of one of the box cover sides along the bottom edge. Cut two pieces of metal channel material accordingly, using a hacksaw. Sand any rough edges or metal burrs protruding from the channel with fine grit sandpaper.

8. Lay the box cover with the attached ashtray on its side. Super glue one of the channel pieces directly onto the bottom edge of one of the sides with the open end of the channel facing the center of the box opening. Repeat the process for the box edge directly across from it, facing the open end of the channel toward the center of the box opening.

9. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly. Slide the acrylic cutout through the grooves until it completely covers the bottom of the box. Re-sand any rough spots on the acrylic edges until the cutout slides easily through the channels.

10. Lay the acrylic bottom on top of the foam rubber. Trace around the perimeter of the acrylic with a magic marker. Cut the foam rubber out slightly smaller than the tracing marks.

11. Turn the box cover with the ashtray upside down and hold the filter cartridge and the air mattress pump up against the bottom of the ashtray. Mark the area on the outside of the box where the power switch will be. Cut a small square opening in the box cover for the switch, using the power drill and the jigsaw.

12. Set the pump with the filter cartridge centered on top of it on a flat surface. Place the box cover over the pump, aligning it with the switch opening and push the foam rubber underneath the pump. Slide the acrylic bottom underneath the box cover along the metal channels.
