Cosplay Costume Making

Cosplay offers an opportunity for fans to emulate their favorite characters.

Cosplayers are some of the most dedicated and faithful fans out there. These people commit themselves to dressing up as their favorite characters for no other reason than to show their love for the books, movies or sports that those character represent. Most of these people make their costumes themselves, which takes many hours to complete. If you are looking to get in on the cosplay action for yourself, take the following bits of advice to heart so that you can look your very best.

Picking a Character

Choosing which character you want to cosplay as is vital. Not only do you want to pick a character whose costume you can actually make, but you want to be sure that you have a character that people can recognize. After all, if you are going to go through the trouble of creating your own outfit, you will want others to see it and know who you are.

On the other hand, you don't want to be lost in the sea of dozens of other Lara Croft cosplayers. Ultimately, the decision is yours to make. But if you want to grab people's attention, you may be wise to select a character that people may recognize but isn't one that a hundred other people will be dressing up as, either.

Finding the Right Materials

When making your own cosplay outfit, you will quickly discover that stores that sell large quantities of fabrics are your best friend. Look for any local arts and crafts stores where you can buy what you need to create your costume. Not only do you have a better chance of finding what you're looking for at these stores, but they are much cheaper than other general retailers like Walmart. .

Don't rule out Halloween stores, either. While their selection is much more limited on the fabric front, they are excellent places to look for specific props for your costume.

Keep It Simple

If you have ever been to events like the San Diego Comic-Con, you will know that those who try to do too much with their costumes tend to turn out looking awful. Keeping your outfit simple and straightforward is the best thing you can do if you are not an experienced costume designer. The last thing you want is for your wings to sag behind your back or for one of your "carefully placed" props to fall off.
