Creative Ideas For A German Flag

The flag appears in more forms than the familiar banner.

The current German flag came into being in May of 1949, in the aftermath of the Second World War. The flag had been used in the past, dating back to 1848 and early German unification. The flag's colors -- horizontal stripes of black, red and yellow -- represent the colors worn by German soldiers during the Napoleonic wars. Today, the flag appears in all kinds of creative ways.

Flag Cakes

Flag cakes are common for celebrations such as national birthdays -- for instance, the 4th of July in the United States -- or the commemoration of significant events -- such as July 14th, Bastille Day in France. The flag can either appear as a cake accoutrement or as the actual design of the cake itself. The German flag is easy to design, and finding icing in black, red and yellow shouldn't be too difficult.

Painted Faces

Face painting turns the wearer into walking symbolism. Often faces are painted to look like animals or clowns, but flags can adorn the faces of the young and old alike with little difficulty. Temporary face paint allows for the German flag to get all kinds of mileage in a creative way.

Tattoos

Tattoos are another creative way to display the German flag. Whether displayed through temporary wash-off tattoos or their permanent, ink-based counterparts, German flag tattoos can come in all kinds of shapes, sizes and designs. From the traditional rectangular flag to the iconic German eagle colored in the flag's three colors, tattoos are a creative -- potentially permanent -- idea for putting the flag on display.

Clothing

Flags appear on clothing throughout the world. Hats, T-shirts, sweatbands, sneakers and even socks can be used to show national pride through a depiction of the flag. Finding clothing with the German flag might be tricky, since such items are less common than those showing the United States flag. Still, whether the item is purchased or made, using clothing to sport the German flag is another way to get some mileage out of the image while also being creative.
