Free Acting Tips

Acting is a skillful artistic expression that comes naturally to some but must be learned by others. Improving your acting skills can be quite easy with the right amount of effort, practice and knowledge of the art of acting. Here are some free acting tips that can help you to become a better actor.

Memorization

Practice makes perfect or so they say and this is also true in acting. Memorization works like practice. Practicing your lines regularly is the key to developing strong memorization skills that will enable you to become a better actor. Actors have to read, study and sometimes research their scripts and their characters to play their roles well. Start by memorizing a song, poetry and then scripts from popular plays like Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and Julius Caesar. Take on the role of a character and learn her lines. Practice with a friend or a fellow actor; this will enhance your memorization skills.

Concentration & Confidence

Actors must be confident and have the ability to concentrate on their work. To fully grasp the character you are playing you must be focused on your lines, the way you express or intonate your words, the environment and the other actors you are interacting with. You need to listen, react and respond while acting. This requires concentration. You must be present in the moment and exude the confidence required to play your character. Confidence and concentration go together because when you are confident about what you are doing, it shows in the way you play your role. Try to resist distracting thoughts and focus solely on the role of your character. Think like your character and let your actions follow your thoughts; this will make you appear like a natural actor.

Vocal Expression

The way you speak and emote your words is very important in acting. Lifeless actors appear dull, boring and uninteresting because they lack the ability to properly express their lines in a way that reflects the character they are playing. A good actor can speak loudly and clearly for others to hear and understand what he is saying. Good acting expression also involves vocal projection coupled with intonations in pitch that are appropriate for the lines in the role the actor is playing.

Posture

In acting, posture is also a form of expression and can be as important as verbal expression. Learn to have good posture and study the character so that your posture reflects the disposition of the character you are playing. The entire body is involved in the portrayal of a character, so you must grasp the mood and emotions of the character to know the right posture for the role.
