Become A Video Game Creator

Video game creators make games that can be played by millions of people around the world

Creating a video game requires a number of different talents. Game creators need to have computer programming knowledge so that they can accurately convey their vision into a playable game and they also need to have an ability to create interesting characters with stories and circumstances that can draw in the player. Many modern video games are like interactive big-budget films with actors, story-lines and action-packed game-play. Becoming a video game creator requires a lot of preparation and hard work.

Instructions

1. Take courses in computer programming, computer science and video game development. Some universities have started integrating video game programming into their curriculum. The knowledge associated with these types of courses is vital to moving forward in the business.

2. Design your own games using game-making software in order to get experience and apply the techniques you are learning through your education. There are a number of different free and paid-for game programs that can help develop your skills.

3. Play as many games as you can for multiple platforms to stay current on games that are being released and also to help inspire you in designing your own games. Study the games that you play to recognize the features that make a game enjoyable, as well as those that reduce its playability.

4. Send job applications to small game development companies or seek out internships at the larger firms such as Electronic Arts or THQ. The experience of working for such a successful company can only improve your chances of a long-term career, even if the initial pay is substandard.

5. Build a portfolio of the games you have created along with the ideas and design concepts that you have created for future games.

6. Submit your resume to the HR departments of game developers that you would like to work for. You will need to be persistent and patient since these jobs are very competitive and it may take time before you get an interview or job offer. Bring your portfolio to any interviews that are set up so you can show your interviewer what you can offer the company.
