Cover A Terra Cotta Pot In Moss

Gather moss on a hike for covering garden flower pots.

Add decorative, rustic charm to your patio or outdoor garden spaces with moss-covered terra cotta pots. A recipe of live moss coats the exterior of the pot. The moss will grow naturally and stay green as long as the moss is kept cool and damp after the initial propagating period. Collect moss for your recipe while enjoying a hike in the country. Moss can be found on trees and rocks, or it can be purchased at your local nursery.

Instructions

1. Shake or pull off as much dirt as you can from the backside of a clump of moss.

2. Tear the clump of moss into 1/3 cup of smaller pieces.

3. Pour the moss pieces in a blender. Add 1 cup of buttermilk. Blend and pulverize the ingredients into a thick soup.

4. Paint the mixture onto the outside of a terra cotta pot using a paintbrush, or smear it on with your hands.

5. Cover the pot completely with plastic wrap, sealing the edges to trap the moisture inside.

6. Place the pot in a sunny location for a few weeks.

7. Remove the plastic wrap. The pot will be covered in moss. Plant a shade-loving plant in the pot and place it in a shady area.
