Whether your manga character is for mainstream distribution, doujinshi (a self-published work) or for fun, having a basic guideline will help you to stay focused during the creation and development process. Here are a few points to guide you along the way.
Instructions
1. Read manga. There is no better way to understand manga characters, character storylines or how manga characters develop within their storylines than reviewing the works of successful manga writers and artists.
2. Join a mainstream manga or doujinshi online community. Networking with other manga writers and artists can help supply you with the tips and tricks of this art form. Also, these communities provide an environment of creativity and support that help you to maintain your excitement and momentum during the manga creation and development process.
3. Write an outline of your manga character's background and include such details as personal history, story setting, character style (hair, clothing, accessories, face and eye shape, body type) and any other traits or information that support your character's identity within your story. If you have limited writing ability, take a writing class or team up with another manga enthusiast to help you with the writing or story development.
4. Sketch your character, or if you are unfamiliar with drawing manga characters or have limited drawing ability, practice with a tracing method or with using an online oekaki art board or read a basic children's manga drawing book such as "Draw MANGA" by Katy Coope. If you are not satisfied with your own artistic abilities, return to any manga communities that you joined, find an artist whose portfolio of work impresses you and set up an e-mail discussion to pitch your idea(s).
