How Make Custom Metal Signs

Lightweight aluminum signs are easy and economical to make for your business and personal projects.

Aluminum signs are light-weight, resistant to corrosion and require minimum maintenance. Most aluminum signs last from three to eight years, depending on the grade of metal used. Indoor signs made of aluminum last for decades. The main question to consider when designing your custom metal sign is whether it would grab someone's attention. Make a lasting impression on your viewer by keeping a few simple things in mind when creating a metal sign.

Instructions

1. Spray paint a base coat on your metal sign. Allow it to completely dry. High contrast colors catch the eye and enhance the effectiveness of your sign. A common scheme is a light color for the background and a dark color for the text. Orange, green, yellow and blue-green are effective light colors. Blue, violet, purple and red are good choices for dark colors.

2. Cover the back of the stencil with a spray adhesive and let it dry for a few seconds. Apply the stencil to the metal sign. Make sure the stencil is straight. Use paper to cover any exposed areas of the sign that are not covered by the stencil. Secure it using painter's tape.

3. Apply the spray paint to the stencil openings. Allow this to dry. Spray a second coat of paint, making sure all open areas of the stencil have been covered with paint. Allow the second coat of paint to dry completely.
