Create Framed Art From Vintage Linens

Create Framed Art from Vintage Linens

Have old family linens stuffed in drawers because you don’t want to ruin them or just don’t know display them without making your home look like your grandmother’s place? Create a handcrafted heirloom worthy of display and gift-giving with this framed art project using vintage fabrics, trims and even a bit of glitz. This project is appropriate for children 7 and up.

Instructions

1. Select a variety of coordinating vintage fabrics, trims and adornments such as those listed above. As a guide, you probably want at least one base fabric, two to four trims and two to three types of adornments to suit your preferences and the size of your frame.

2. Lay the base fabric face down on top of the frame and mark the outer edge with a pencil. Cut the base fabric(s) and trims to fit within the frame dimensions.

3. Lay out all fabrics on a tabletop. Start with the base fabric, then layer until you have a pleasing design.

4. Hold the spray adhesive can upright 8 to 12 inches from the fabric. Apply adhesive to the back of the base fabric and smooth the fabric onto the frame backing.

5. Adhere trim fabrics to top of the base fabric using a light coating of tacky glue to the back of each. The glue will dry clear.

6. Thread a needle and sew on buttons and beads as desired. Be sure to use a thread color that will blend well with the base fabric.

7. Apply a small dot of tacky glue directly on top of the fabric and place each sequin atop glue. Lightly press down on the sequin with the eraser end of the pencil or a thin paintbrush for 5 to 10 seconds until set.

8. Carefully replace the frame’s glass over the fabric and decorations.

9. Stand frame on a tabletop to display, or mount a saw-tooth metal bracket to the frame’s back with two small screws to hang the project on a wall.
