A Corel Painter Sketch Pad Tutorial

Corel Painter Sketch Book can emulate real-life sketching styles easily, with an artist-friendly interface and workflow.

Corel Painter Sketch Pad is a digital painting and sketching program released by Corel Software. The software is a spin-off of the Corel Painter photo-editing software. Sketch Pad focuses on the early design stages of ideas and aims to give artists a quick and easy way to produce digital sketches that convey basic ideas and key concepts. A simple set of drawing and painting tools in Sketch Pad gives users a basic but powerful tool set to create conceptual art.

Instructions

1. Open Corel Painter Sketch Pad from your Windows Start Menu by clicking "Start," "Program Files," "Corel" and "Corel Painter Sketch Pad." The application will start up in a new window and display a blank canvas space for you to work on.

2. Click on the "New Page" button on the top bar of the Sketch Pad interface. The button is the first icon on the left, denoted by a sketchbook with a plus sign. A new dialog box will pop up. This will create a new page from scratch with your desired size and other preferences.

3. Input the dimensions of your new drawing, selecting either pixels, inches or centimeters as the drawing unit from the drop-down list. Specify a resolution for your image. A good starting resolution to work with is about 150 pixels per inch. Select the paper texture for your new drawing by clicking on one of the thumbnail previews provided and clicking the "OK" button.

4. Click on the brush type you wish to draw with for your sketch from the second circular tool palette at the bottom of the interface. Tools dealing with creation or deletion of strokes and drawings are all located at the bottom of the interface, in four main circular tool palettes. The first palette allows for the user to pick a color of the next drawing stroke. The second palette is a brush selection palette, with various brushes and pencils, from watercolor, colored pencil and chalk. The third palette adjusts the user's brush size, stroke opacity and stroke graininess. The fourth palette features selection, paint bucket and movement tools.

5. Click on a color range you wish to work with by clicking on the color wheel in the first circular palette. Adjust the amount of white or black that is added to the pure color by clicking on the center triangle within this palette.

6. Draw on your blank paper space by clicking and dragging on your canvas. Erase drawing strokes you have made by selecting the eraser tool from the brush selection palette. If you want to undo or redo a stroke you have created, simply press "Ctrl" plus "Z" and "Ctrl" plus "Y," respectively.

7. Save your drawing by clicking "File" and "Save" from the top pull-down menu. This will save the drawing in a native Sketch Pad format. If you wish to save your drawing as a common image file, such as a .JPEG, click on the "Export Page" button located at the top of the application interface. A new dialog box will open, in which you can select the save location of your drawing, as well as file type of the image file.
