Body Painting Art Ideas

Body painting techniques range from simple and temporary to elaborate pieces of art.

Body painting is a form of art used on children and adults alike. Face paint transforms a little girl into a kitty cat for Halloween, or creates a character in the Broadway play "Cats." Henna art, latex body paint and airbrushed makeup all have unique applications, depending on your needs.

Mehandi

Mehandi is also called henna body painting, or a temporary tattoo. Henna is applied to the surface of the skin, creating a temporary stain. Henna is a dried organic plant material that is powdered, then mixed with water and essential oil. The reddish-brown stain lasts several weeks.

Body painting with henna began in India and the Middle East. Elaborate designs are applied to the hands and feet of brides. Aside from aesthetics, the belief is that the longer the images, last the more blessings will be bestowed on the marriage.

Full Body Painting

Full body painting uses a live human body as the canvas, turning it into a temporary art piece. Typically, a body painting session is completed and documented in one day. Extreme full body designs are used in photography sessions or created for an special event.

Liquid latex paint forms a solid coating over the skin. Once applied with a foam brush or roller, it dries within 5-10 minutes. It is used to paint clothing onto the body. The outfit will be destroyed when peeled off.

Tattoos

Tattoos are a permanent form of body painting. The designs range from small images to larger scale works. Indelible ink is injected into the skin for a permanent pigment change. Tattoo artists create original designs and place them anywhere on the body. A range of colorful pigments are available.

Face Painting

Face painting entails creating a simple design, often with different colors, on a child's face. Face painters are found at carnivals, zoos and parties. Painting a rainbow, star, heart or popular cartoon character are typical choices.

Airbrushed makeup is another body painting option. Makeup artists use stencils and air brushing tools to make realistic animal print patterns on the skin or the eyelids for an elaborate party accessory.
