Assemble an Artist's Portfolio
Your artist's portfolio should demonstrate to potential clients that you have vision as well as talent. It shows you understand the industry you're aiming to work in, whether it be in business as a graphic designer, in children's literature as an illustrator or in fashion as a photographer. Follow these steps to assemble an effective portfolio.
Instructions
1. Decide what you want to convey in your work. Your artist's portfolio should show potential clients what you have to contribute to their businesses.
2. Divide the pictures for your portfolio into groups by subject or style. You want the presentation to flow smoothly from one set of images to the next.
3. Plan the presentation of your work in the portfolio. The order of your pictures or photos should make your vision clear.
4. Intersperse dramatic works with calmer ones. Consider whether you should include disturbing subjects. Photographs of people in distress or violence should only be included if they're appropriate for the industry you're aiming to work in, such as photo journalism.
5. Group works of different sizes together. Keep larger pictures in one section and smaller ones in another so your viewer can concentrate on the images, rather than having to refocus with every page.
6. Note the direction of each image. Group horizontal pictures together and vertical ones together. Make sure there's a neat margin on all four sides of each portfolio page.
7. Separate color from black-and-white pictures in your artist's portfolio.
