Create With Fiberglass

Creating items with fiberglass is surprisingly easy for most newcomers. With the specific tools of the trade and an idea of what you are planning to create, you can easily mold anything out of fiberglass.

Instructions

1. Visit a hardware store and ask what kinds of fiberglass resin they sell. Depending on the job you are doing, the square footage you need to cover and the thickness of the fiberglass, the store representative you speak to will direct you to the proper resin for the job.

2. Have an idea of what you plan to build before you start. The ability to form fiberglass into anything you want is daunting to some people; however, many others see it as an advantage. For example, let’s say a race-car owner wants to lower the weight of his car by creating a fiberglass hood.

3. Create a frame by outlining the area you wish to imitate in fiberglass with a thin frame of wood. Using our example, remove a metal hood from the car, lay it on the ground or on a table, and make a frame that clearly covers the hood’s boundaries.

4. Attach a polyester-based cloth to the frame and attach it (with tape or staples) to the frame. The cloth should fit neatly over the hood and clearly outline all of its contours and basic shapes. Work out any creases or wrinkles in the cloth, as they will be represented in the finished product.

5. Spray the resin over the cloth in a thick coating. This will allow the fiberglass to form into the shape of the hood. Let it stand overnight without moving it. The next day, remove the hood and trim away any unusual edges.
