Halloween Lighting Effects

Halloween lighting effects can add a dramatic effect to a party or haunted house.

Halloween is a festive time of year, full of family gatherings and spooky parties with old and new friends. Whether you're interested in creating a ghoulish theme for a party or a frightening exterior design for your home, Halloween lighting effects add an otherworldly appearance for any occasion. When designing the lighting effect for Halloween, take time to outline the overall theme for the party or event and match the lighting effect with this theme.

Lightening

Creating an eerie effect for an outdoor graveyard scene or to enhance the spookiness of an indoor Halloween party utilizing a lightening effect can add a dynamic feel to Halloween decorations. To create this type of effect, purchase a set of two strobe lights at any party retail store. Strobe lights emit a bright flash of light at a duration you select, thus you can sync the light with thunder, if you have a thunder audio track. Party retail stores also carry thunder, or horror-style, soundtracks. Set up the strobe light in a corner of the room or in a corner of your yard. Note: bring strobe lights inside if it rains as they are not waterproof.

Haze

Two things horror movies and haunted houses have in common are hazy environments. By reducing the clarity of an environment, patron's imaginations begin to wander as they are unable to see what is lurking several feet in front of them. Adding a haze lighting effect can add a creepy and terrifying element to a Halloween party or a homemade haunted house. To accomplish this Halloween lighting effect, purchase a fog machine from your local party retail store (these items can also be rented), along with several bright hot lights. A hot light is a continual light source, not a strobe light. Fog machines work by introducing a fog fluid into a heat exchanger, and when heated a thick, non-toxic, vapor is emitted. After the fog is produced, turn on the lights and transform your environment into a creepy Halloween fright-fest.

Devil Red

If you're working on a limited budget, you can achieve a creepy Halloween lighting effect by changing out your light bulbs. Light bulbs come in a wide variety of colors; however, to accomplish a demonic feel installing red party lights in your lamps and overhead light fixtures will alter the atmosphere of any room. Local party retail stores and local home improvement stores typically sell red party lights, and these bulbs fit any standard light fixture. Add a layer of depth by installing a purple or green bulb in hallways or smaller rooms to further establish a creepy vibe.
